"Awaiting Hope"

"Awaiting Hope"
 - Emilie Grace Rush (English 9 Honors, March 2, 2016)

I've come to terms with life.
It's tremendous highs,
It's sickening lows
and its measly middle.

Some days are fantastic,
others lackluster.
A few heartbreaking,
yet I don't lose hope.

I don't lose hope
when life rains on my parade
or renders me diseased, or
when it brings the dark cloud of despair.

When it does, I dream of the summer sun,
and harmonious joy
with family and friends,
signing of bliss and cheer.

Hope surprises me
like a cool breeze on a humid summer's day
or a freshly cut diamond in the midst of grime and rust
not always clear, but always there.

We expect for hope to come regardless,
to silently meet our needs
to fuel our dreams
and allow us to continue on for all of eternity.

Yet I know it is such,
and I know there is hope for me.

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
In His great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.
1 Peter 1:3-4a NIV

  1. Oh Emilie, this is just beautiful. You have a beautiful heart and a deep soul. Your mom IS so proud of you. We've never met but I have followed your family's journey from Charlotte. I am a graduate of Grove City College several years before your parents. Praying for that Hope and Peace to resound in you all, especially now.

  2. Well crafted and true words, Emilie. Your penultimate (honors English word, haha) stanza jumps out to me. "We expect our hope to come regardless, to silently meets our needs, to fuel our dreams, and allow us to continue on..." So true, because of God's love "hope does not disappoint us."(Roman's 5:5) With your permission I'd like to quote your poem :)

  7. Emily, you don't know me, but I know about you from the Rider's. I was looking at the picture of you girls while I was there on Wednesday. It made me think of you and your family and wondered how you were doing. Your poem is beautiful and shows a reflection of how the Lord is using you. Thank you for sharing it. I always loved reading your mom's blogs and it seems like you have been blessed with the gift of writing, too. Your poem was such an encouragement! Kathy Rutter ( I can't figure out how to edit my name so it has to be Aunt Kathy for now.

  8. Emilie, when God puts words in our heart and we keep them to ourselves it is a singular blessing, a singular gift. But when we take those words and share them it is a blessing to all, a gift of God shared. Thank you for sharing God's gift. It was a wise reminder to me.
